Delicious Summer Treat & Giveaway Winner!

Those of you who frequent dim sum restaurants have probably ordered this dessert many times before.  Almond tofu (also known as almond pudding or almond jelly) is the perfectly refreshing finish to all those little dumplings.  Maybe you've had a variation of this dessert such as mango pudding, coconut jelly, or coffee pudding -- which are all equally delicious.  But did you know these creamy Chinese jellies are also good for the skin?  One of the main ingredients is agar agar, a gelatin made from seaweed that contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and lipids that cleanse, tone, firm, soften, and hydrate the skin.

Some of the newer recipes call for regular gelatin instead of agar agar and you may want to substitute it as well if you have difficulty finding the agar agar (I found mine at the local Korean market).  Gelatin contains a high concentration of glycoprotein and proline amino acids which is known for smoothing the skin and strengthening hair and nails -- so it's also good for you!  I prefer using the agar agar as I am a vegetarian -- it was a relief to discover I could still enjoy "jelloesque" desserts!

The best part of the almond tofu recipe is how few ingredients you need and how simple it is to make.  Most of you probably have this stuff lying around the house!

What you'll need:

2 cups water
5 tablespoons sugar
3/4 cup fat free evaporated milk
2 teaspoons almond extract
1/2 tablespoon agar agar powder (or 2 packets unflavored Knox gelatin)

*NOTE: If you prefer a "milkier" taste or a solid white colored almond tofu you can substitute the evaporated milk with 2 cups of regular milk and reduce the water to 1.5 cups

Directions:

Pour 1 cup of water into a sauce pan and sprinkle the agar agar powder (or unflavored gelatin) on top.

Set stove to medium-low setting and bring mixture to a boil, stirring until the powder dissolves.

Add the sugar, evaporated milk, almond extract, and remaining water, stirring for an even consistency.

Remove from heat and pour mixture into your favorite mold.  (You can add food coloring for a fun colored pudding.)

Place mold in refrigerator and let set for 2-3 hours.

When hardened, remove from refrigerator -- serve and enjoy!  There are many ways to eat almond tofu -- it is often cut into cubes to look like real tofu. Popular toppings include litchis, cherries, and fruit cocktail. Use your imagination!

And yes I finally have the winner for my Super Kawaii Giveaway.  Thank you all for being patient -- it took awhile to get through the 580 entries and almost 3000 extra entries!
The winner is Susie P all the way in the Philippines!  I've sent you an e-mail so please reply with your mailing address.

Thanks to all who entered.  Next up -- my Hello Kitty Giveaway!

    Cellnique Review & Giveaway

    COMMENTS
So who here hasn't heard of Cellnique yet?  Cellnique is a pharmaceutical grade skin care line based in Malaysia and probably most well-known for their famous miracle acne & scar reducing Skin Action Sebum Gel.  I've read countless reviews from various beauty bloggers and have always been intrigued so I was positively thrilled to be contacted by them!

Cellnique is hosting a blogger contest and they invited me to participate because some of you nominated me as your favorite blogger (thanks so much guys)!  Basically whoever creates the Cellnique related blog content that goes the "most viral" will win an all expenses paid trip to Malaysia!  Malaysia!  I know I've always fantasized about the bustling city and beautiful beaches!  And here's the awesome bonus -- if I get chosen, Cellnique will also pick one of my readers to meet me in Malaysia!

First off I was incredibly impressed with Cellnique's customer service. They replied to all my e-mails the same day and Ruby, one of Cellnique's beauty advisers actually read through my blog and hand picked a personalized skin care regimen based on skin problems and previous products I spoke of in past entries as well as the concerns mentioned in my e-mails.  They then sent me a tracking number and my products arrived in THREE DAYS -- all the way from Malaysia!  Who can say the same about customer service for some of these American companies?

Here's what Ruby picked out for me:

This gentle milk cleanses and nourishes your skin at the same time.  It contains vitamin C and wheat germ to help fight against free radicals and is suitable for post-procedure skin such as after chemical peels and microdermabrasions.  It's supposed to be vanilla scented but I would say it smells more like freshly baked bread.

I love the creamy texture and it's so soothing to apply.  It works great as a morning cleanser or a make-up remover for night time -- I do recommend using an additional cleanser if you are wearing make-up.  A tip from the Cellnique website is to mix this milk with their Advanced Bio Renewal Masque a couple times a week for an awesome exfoliation!  My skin feels supple and moisturized after using this milk -- definitely a nice alternative to my usual cleansing oils!

    Price: $38.00

This serum contains a patented formulation of alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, vitamins, and fruit enzymes to re-texturize the skin and stimulate cell renewal by gently exfoliating the skin to remove dead skin cells.  It dissolves debris in the pores and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to promote skin texture.  Upon applying the creamy serum I felt a slight tingle but it wasn't the least bit irritating and absorbed quickly into my skin.  The scent is similar to a mild sunblock but hardly noticeable.  I applied it overnight under my night cream and woke up to clear, radiant skin.  I can't wait to see the long term effects!

    Price: $51.00

This magical little duo consists of Amino Collagen C Intense I and Amino Collagen C Intense II.  Intense I is a high-potency vitamin C serum that improves skin resilience and refines open pores.  It also lightens acne scars, increases collagen, and firms and lifts the skin.

Intense II is an oil-free serum that contains a low-density hyaluronate acid that helps repair damaged cells and instantly delivers a silky smooth texture after application.  The serum reduces wrinkles and the hyaluronate acid retains moisture in the skin.

These serums come with droppers -- just like magic potions!  It does seem like it's one step too many at first but you quickly get used to applying one after the other.  Eventually you learn to enjoy all the skin care steps because you realize all the good your doing for your skin!  Intense I also has a slight tingle upon application from the acids but that's just to let you know that it's working!  It may be be a little harsh for those with sensitive skin to apply morning and night so you should start out with just applying these once a day.

After using this set for a few days I saw improvement in the texture and clarity of my skin, and saw a slight lightening in my acne scars but again I will have to use it a little longer for the much raved about long term benefits.

    Price: $96.00

Can you say tropical paradise?!  This deliciously pineapple scented masque is one of Cellnique's top selling products and treats dull and uneven skin tone, congestion, pigmentation, wrinkles, discoloration, enlarged pores, and acne scars.  It contains fruit enzymes and acids for the perfect exfoliation to instantly whiten and brighten the skin.

The texture is a creamy clay and spreads easily over the skin.   It also contains small beads to give you a nice little scrub as you massage your face and rinse off.  You all know I'm a bit of a mask whore so it takes a lot to impress me but I love everything about this stuff from the scent to the consistency to the way my skin feels baby soft after applying it!

    Price: $51.00

Overall I am thoroughly impressed with Cellnique and amazed at the improvement in my skin in such a short period of time.  Most of the products offered instant gratification through brighter, clearer, and softer skin.  I've seriously tried so many skin care lines but Cellnique is on top of their game -- the beauty advisers are so knowledgeable about their products and able to offer educated advice for any skin condition.  I will definitely be purchasing more items to complete my skin care regimen.  The packaging is sleek, sturdy, and expensive looking -- definitely something you would find at a high-end department store counter -- and would make for an impressive looking gift.

Speaking of gifts -- I did want to include a giveaway with this post because Cellnique's products can be a little pricey and hard to get, and I really want others to be able to try them out.  Everything is amazing and it will really change the way you view skin care.

Remember you can purchase any of their products from Cellnique.com and their shipping IS super speedy.  They offer free shipping for any purchase over $60 as well as free samples and a 7 day return policy.  And it is honestly worth the money to see such an amazing improvement in your skin.  As you can see from their Facebook and other beauty blogs they have a huge following and many many rave reviews.

    Summer Sun Essentials

    10
    COMMENTS

Summer is officially here and the whole country has the temperatures to prove it!  I've been making my rounds to the Vegas pools and am happy to say I finally have a tan going on!  The boyfriend holds "high label" cards at most of the strip properties which means free access to pretty much every pool and pool party on the strip!  I decided to make it my mission to visit a different pool daily and eventually do a "best pools in Vegas" post because Vegas seriously has some of the most beautiful pools in the world!

For the most part I've been careful with the sun block but on one occasion I laid out at the Bellagio pool without my Banana Boat for a measly hour and I was burnt to a crisp!  One hour!  I thought it would be okay because the day before I was at the pool for 6 hours with just an SPF 15 and barely got a hint of color.  Yeah biggest mistake ever -- ended up having to stay in for a good week to heal up.

So the desert climate in Vegas definitely requires some special products to stay in beauty shape.  The city makes me prone to brittle nails, split ends, flaky skin, and chapped lips.  And the 110 degree summers are absolutely brutal.  Here's what I take to hit the pool:

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream for Face SPF 55 PA+++

Every beauty blogger seems to rave about this sunblock -- and with good reason!  Shiseido packs in a super high SPF to give an extra boost of protection for the delicate skin on the face.  It's also mattifying and controls oil so you don't have to get that "sunscreen slick" when you sweat or wear make-up.

I know I've mentioned this before but his stuff is a MUST HAVE.  Time flies when you're in the water and having fun but just sitting out on a chaise gets boring and HOT -- and sometimes you just don't feel like jumping into the pool and getting soaked.  The Evian Mineral Water Spray offers cool relief for both face and body.

    Kiehl's Lip Balm SPF 15

Most of us don't leave home without chapstick but sometimes we forget that our lips need SPF too.  The Kiehl's lip balm in color 30G provides a hint of golden peach to the lips while protecting them from harmful UV rays with SPF 15.  It's moisturizing and relieves dry lips without to being too thick and greasy.

The sun and pool water (or ocean water) are a double whammy of bad for the hair.  This spray contains grapeseed oil and other antioxidants to protect your hair from the sun and chlorine.  It also helps to prevent your hair color from fading.  My hair was supple and shiny even after a long day in the sun.

    Benefit Benetint & Posietint

These lip & cheek stains are perfect for a hint of summer color.  None of that heaviness from powders -- just a nice glow.  I like the Benetint for a berry stain on the lips and the Posietint for baby pink cheeks.

    Banana Boat Ultra Mist Sport

I'm so upset I didn't discover this stuff sooner!  Both the mist and cream versions of this sport sunblock absorb right into the skin.  And it won't drip off with sweat or get slimy in the water -- you might even forget you have it on!  The mist version is perfect for those who are lazy when it comes to reapplying.  It's the summer of spray products!

    E-Reader

It seems like EVERYONE at the pool has a Kindle or Nook.  I got my Nook rooted (aka jailbroken) and it pretty much works as a Galaxy Tablet now (or a mini iPad) with full access to the Android market!  Reading books, catching up on blogs, checking e-mails, and facebooking definitely helps pass the time when lying out.  Although I do have to say the black-and-white kindles and nooks are better for reading out in the sun.
