Puerto Rico!

When I came across an incredible deal to Puerto Rico this past May, I couldn't pass it up.  We booked the trip about two days before the departure, with one friend actually buying her plane tickets on the day of!

Puerto Rico is a pretty easy trip from DC -- a short 3 hour flight, no passport required, cell phones work without roaming, every thing's reasonably priced -- pretty much a perfect short getaway.  Although most of my friends have been to Puerto Rico before, nobody in the group I went with had ever been so it was a new experience for every one!

We stayed at the Gran Melia Golf Resort which was about 30 minutes from the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.  The grounds were impressive -- beautiful pool, steps from the beach, and awesome food! The rooms were clean enough but could definitely use a renovation.

Day 1

Upon arrival the weather was rainy/gloomy and it made us a little depressed.  Even the ocean looked dark and murky.  We were pretty worried the weather would stay this way our entire trip.

To cheer up our mood we decided to head over to Old San Juan for dinner.  Since none of us had ever been, we actually "yelped" restaurants to find this cute place called Punta de Vista, which had some awesome reviews.  They offered $1 Heineken's, 2 for 1 mojitos, and were apparently famous for their fish tacos.

We took advantage of their drink specials of course, and ordered nachos, cheese fries, steak tacos, and fish tacos.  The food wasn't amazing but everything was reasonably priced and the place had a great local vibe.

Day 2
Thank goodness we woke up to beautiful weather!  We had lunch at the poolside cafe (best fish n' chips EVER!) and played in the now blue ocean.

For dinner, on a friend's recommendation we headed back to Old San Juan, and ate at the Hotel El Covento.  Another place with a great vibe -- very quaint and historic feeling.  Everything tasted amazing but my personal favorite was the french bread appetizer with truffle honey and manchengo cheese!

Day 3
Spent time at the amazing pool -- probably the best amenity in the resort.  I am obsessed with the loungers IN the pool -- so you can get your tan on while staying cool!

My favorite part of the trip was definitely the El Yunque Rainforest.  Unfortunately we arrived too late to hike on the trail but just seeing some of the waterfalls was amazing.

For our final night we headed out to the port city of Fajardo for the most amazing meal of the trip.  (Another Yelp find lol.)  I had mofongo, which is an authentic Puerto Rican dish consisting of deep fried plantains, filled with meat or seafood of choice, and served in a wooden mortar.

Overall the perfect short trip!  Next time I go I would definitely like to do the rain forest hike, canoe in the bioluminescent bays, and visit the island of Vieques.

I'm glad you liked it. Though I've lived in Puerto Rico for all of my 17 years of life and I've never been to the places in the pictures.
